What is an SMS Segment?
What is an SMS Segment?
Updated over 2 weeks ago

An SMS segment is typically up to 160 characters long. However, if your message exceeds 160 characters, each segment is reduced to 153 characters due to the way SMS infrastructure was built by carriers. This means that messages longer than 160 characters will use more segments, with the character limit per segment dropping to 153. Additionally, certain characters like emojis can affect the segment count, potentially increasing the number of segments used. SMS messages can be longer than 160 characters, however you will be billed per segment. Be sure to pay attention to Textla's segment counter when crafting your SMS messages:

If an emoji is present in your message, segments are calculated at 67 characters each.

SMS messages (texts with no files attached) deduct 1 credit per segment. Learn more about how credits work here!

*Segments do not apply on MMS messages, which allow up to 1,600 characters.*
