If you are more of a visual learner, feel free to watch this simple step by step video on buying a number from Twilio.

Buying a Number

  1. On the Twilio.com Dashboard, click the Phone Numbers dropdown on the left-hand sidebar. Then click Manage, then Buy a number.

2. Select Country - This determines what country the number will be from

3. Capabilities

  • Voice means that this number is able to make phone calls.

  • SMS means that this number is able to send text messages.

  • MMS means that this number is able to send media such as photos or videos.

  • Fax means that this number is able to send faxes.

4. Search Criteria is how you filter the numbers to get exactly what you are looking for. You can search by area code or city by using this filter.

5. Advanced Search adds more filtering options to your search results

  • Number type - Local numbers contain an area code from a specific city. Mobile numbers are similar to local numbers, however they are classified by regions, and not city specific. Toll-Free numbers begin with an 800 code, and cost $2 per month as compared to $1 for local and mobile. This is recommended for enterprise companies that are sending texts all around the country.

  • Address requirements - Set to any. This exempts you from any numbers that require proof of address within the region your number is from.

  • Beta numbers - This will include numbers that are new to Twilio in your search results

  • Emergency calling - This includes phone numbers that are capable of emergency calling

6. Once you have filled in any filters that you need, click the Search button. Twilio will now list all available numbers that fit your needs. When you find one that you like, click the Buy button for the number. Review the number to make sure it is correct, then check that you agree to comply with the Emergency calling terms and conditions.

7. Now click the Buy button in the bottom right.

8. Click the Configure button in the bottom right.

9. Scroll down and click the Add Emergency Address button. Click the + button. Fill out your address and check the acknowledge box. Now click the Create button in the bottom right. Lastly, click Add Emergency Address. This should be pending for around a day while Twilio verifies it.

10. Once the number has been purchased, you will need to verify it. Refer to these guides:

  • If you purchased a local number, verify it with A2P 10DLC here

  • If you purchased a toll-free number, verify it here
